Appeal to the Secretary General and to the Heads of State and of Government of the member countries of the United Nations

We citizens of Chechnya, of Russia, and of the whole world

address this appeal with confidence to the United Nations and to all States that hold dear the fate of human life and civilisation in this far corner of Europe, cancelled from the conscience of the West and of the free countries and consigned for the last ten years to the Russian occupying forces.

The Russian State is renewing a tragedy that has dragged on for three centuries, from one occupation to the next, from one deportation to the next, from one massacre to the next. This centuries-old colonisation is a source of shame for the whole of humanity and a tragedy that unites, rather than divides, the Russian and Chechen peoples in a common fate.

We Chechens,

have, in the last ten years, seen our country devastated, our capital Grozny razed to the ground, our villages, fields and woods, and our people itself, become the daily target of a war that seems to have no end or epilogue other than our definitive annihilation.

We have seen our sons and daughters, our fathers and mothers, our husbands and wives, our brothers and sisters, rounded up in the middle of the night, deported, imprisoned, tortured, raped, mutilated and murdered.

We have seen, with great anguish, the growing risk that some of those younger and weaker than us, brought up in a world that knows nothing but war, will yield to the temptation of terrorism and entrust their hopes to a "murderous courage" that would put them on the same level as the occupiers.

We have seen that our fragile institutions, consecrated by a democratic election in 1997 and recognised by the international community and by the Russian Federation itself, were first delegitimised, then replaced by a straw government, and finally swept away by a sham referendum.

We Russians,

know that thousands of our soldiers have been killed, their bodies returned secretly to the cemeteries in our towns and villages.

We know that our soldiers are condemned to commit innumerable atrocities and crimes on the orders of cynical, mercenary autocrats and generals.

We know that this war kills tens of thousands of men and women, and with them the hopes for democracy and freedom that we have been nurturing in our hearts since the end of the Cold War.

We citizens of the whole world,

share the sense of horror felt by many Russians and the sense of terror that haunts the Chechens in the face of the devastation of this small piece of Europe and of the world, which is still called Chechnya.

We believe that what is happening in this deliberately and blamefully abandoned region increasingly resembles a full-fledged genocide.

Dear Secretary General, dear Heads of State and of Government,

We believe that it is intolerable that the international community should continue to ignore the daily unfolding of this terrible tragedy, and that we cannot continue to turn a blind eye and shirk our responsibilities with respect to what is happening in Chechnya.

We support the plan for "conditional independence" presented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Ilyas Akhmadov, which proposes the establishment of an interim United Nations administration on the basis of the disarmament of all the Chechen forces and the withdrawal of all the Russian military and administrative personnel. At the end of this period of transition, during which the UN would be charged with administering the country and co-ordinating the re-establishment of the civil, political and material order of a country strewn with ruins and comon graves, the surviving population would be called to elect its own parliament and government.

We citizens of Chechnya, of Russia, and of the whole world

ask you solemnly and with confidence to take all the necessary steps to ensure that the Akhmadov plan for peace and democracy in Chechnya is first studied and then implemented.

We hope that, in this framework, a Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Chechnya will be appointed as soon as possible.

The security of the Russian poeple and the lives of the Chechen people cannot be sacrificed to the logic of a conflict that no-one can hope any longer to win on the battlefield. It is up to the international commity and to the United Nations to enable two peoples who are both losing a shameful war to join forces in order to win an honourable peace.

Liberal Arab Columnist: 'Why do Arabs Hate the West, Especially the U.S.?'

In an article titled "Why Do Arabs Hate the West, Especially the U.S.," Zuheir Abdallah, columnist for the London-based Arabic daily Al-Hayat, blames Arab fascism and Islamism for failing to achieve any accomplishments for the Arab world since 1948, leading to its backwardness today. The following are excerpts from the article: [1]

Arabs Should Remember They Invaded and Occupied Europe Before The Crusades

"Most Arabs hate the West, especially the U.S., for many reasons; some date back to the Crusades and the Andalusia period, and more recently, because of Palestine and Iraq. I don't intend to delve into this historical turmoil, but for the sake of history, the Arabs should remember that they invaded and occupied important parts of Europe hundreds of years before the Crusades wars.

"The West and the U.S. in particular, as a result of their growing financial and moral power since the 1950s, and just like any human force, dominates and colonizes… just like them the Assyrians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Persians, the Arabs, the Tatars, the Ottomans and others did before them… But since the 1950s, both the dominating and dominated initiated an attempt to build a new world, where competition (which is part of human nature) gradually moved from the battlefields to the realm of creation, economy and trade. Sciences and inventions developed as never before, especially in the fields of space, communications and medicine, which led to the invention of computers, the Internet and satellites, and many medicines and antibiotics were discovered, overcoming many diseases and increasing humans' life expectancy. In general, the world went on a stable path of progress, as trade prospered (with the elimination of tariffs and the speed in transportation)."

Since 1948 The Arab World Has Regressed

"But despite this, the Arab world failed to ride the same wagon (except for the consumption part), ever since the Palestinian Nakba in 1948. Since then, under the pretext of liberating Palestine and destroying the occupation's agents, most Arab countries were taken over by not so intelligent and more tyrannical people (mostly from the military). Thus, the economic and scientific growth regressed and reached the bottom level, in comparison to the rest of the countries in the world (according to the last report of the UN)."

Arab Fascism and Fundamentalist Islam Have Nothing to Offer People

"Since 1948, the primitive Arab fascism was given free reign, and boosted by the backwards soldiers, from the officers to reactionary parties (sometimes self-dubbed progressive), and other times allied with fundamentalist Islam. It has nothing to offer to its people except empty slogans revolving around the themes of resistance and struggle, for no voice can be louder than that of the fight, and consequently, corruption spread, and this Arab fascism was constantly being defeated in its Don-Quixote-like-battles with any foreign force (except its people, as it always vanquished them).

"All around the world, extremist slogans and concepts are falling one after the other; but in the Arab world, they have reached such a level that many simple-minded people and ignorant persons were unfortunately brainwashed and turned into the fuel of this extremism. When discussing with many Arab citizens, even those claiming to be educated, about the reason for our backwardness, you get a preset answer to the effect that the West with the U.S. in particular are stopping the Arabs from progressing. If this hypothesis is true, then why did certain Arab and Islamic countries, such as Malaysia and Dubai [sic], manage to achieve progress (even if partially)?"

Arabs Reject Western Inventions, Only to Embrace them Later

"The West and the U.S. in particular achieved major accomplishments over the past century. As for us, Arabs and Muslims, we became at most consumers of these accomplishments and inventions; we reject them at first claiming they are designed to control us, then consume them fast and even hide it most of the time. The examples are many:

* The invention of radio transmission, then television then satellite channels, then electronic communications devices. Most Arabs misused these means, and used them as channels for religious extremism, political provocation, and transmission of erroneous information. The young generation spends long hours on the Internet to view pornographic pictures, mainly in the highly conservative societies, which foster frustration. Before the modern communication means (visual and audio), we had enlightened religious scholars such as Mohamad Abdu and Jamaleddine Al Afghani. After the confusion resulting from these means, we have Sheikhs like bin Laden, Al Dhawahiri and many others we watch and hear on the Arab satellite channels.

* The weapons were highly and unusually developed during the last century. From 1948 to this day, arms purchases in the Middle East occupied the first place among the countries in the world and reached between 1995 and 1997, about 38% from world purchases in comparison to 3% in South America, according to the U.S. State Department's report: "Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers 1998." Most of these purchases were made under the pretext of liberating Palestine and fighting the enemies. They were either used against the people or during the civil wars or to attack neighboring countries. As for Israel, it remains the most powerful in terms of arms.

* In the medical field, penicillin and antibiotics were discovered, which saved millions and billions of human lives from fatal diseases as typhoid and many children diseases. As a result, there was a disorder in the demographic balance of many developing countries, especially in the Arab countries, as birth rates considerably grew (sometimes encouraged by ignorant rulers), combined with a decrease in death rates, especially infantile. As a result, the yearly demographic increase varied between 3 and 5%, which means that the census in some Arab countries doubled every 16 years. Social, political and environmental problems ensued and governments and people couldn't confront them.

"These are few of the examples on the inventions and discoveries of the last centuries and how they were misused in the Arab world. Let us stop for a minute and ask ourselves, Arabs and most Muslims, what did we offer for ourselves and the rest of the world, since the beginning of the industrial revolution to this day, from human sciences and inventions or any other added value to civilization? Unfortunately, the answer is: almost nothing!!"

Al-Qaeda terror chief runs Iraqi hit squads

AL-QAEDA terrorists who have infiltrated Iraq from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have formed an alliance with former intelligence agents of Saddam Hussein to fight their common enemy, the American forces.

The alliance, known as Jaish Mohammed — the army of the prophet Mohammed — is believed to be responsible for increasingly sophisticated attacks on US soldiers. In the past four months it has smuggled millions of dollars, weapons and hundreds of Arab fighters across the desert border with Saudi Arabia.

Details of the alliance have emerged from Iraqi intelligence and US military sources, and from local supporters in a belt of restive Sunni Muslim towns to the west of Baghdad.

Influenced by Wahhabism — a fundamentalist strain of Islam followed in Saudi Arabia and by Osama Bin Laden — it represents a new force for Al-Qaeda in its holy war against the US. The group is led by a top Saudi Al-Qaeda officer, while most of the lieutenants and foot soldiers are Iraqis, who can move easily among the locals.

The Sunday Times has obtained the name of the leader but has been asked not to publish it for fear of jeopardising security operations. He does not direct every attack, but oversees training and ensures cells follow his commands about targets.The Saudi relies for planning, logistics and recruitment on two former Iraqi intelligence officials, including Mohammed al-Kudier, a former director of special operations in Saddam's Mukhabarat security service.

According to the sources, they run a training camp at Razaza, 30 miles from the town of Ramadi, at a former lakeside resort that Saddam turned into a base for army manoeuvres. Last Friday a driver was shot and killed on a nearby road.

The new threat to the Americans was disclosed yesterday as British troops in Iraq's second city of Basra came under attack from a mob complaining about petrol and power shortages in temperatures of 57C (135F). Three soldiers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment were hit by stones but were not seriously injured.

Jaish Mohammed seems to analysts to be an improbable alliance. Al-Qaeda was formed by Bin Laden to drive American forces from Saudi Arabia, home to the two holiest sites in Islam. Saddam's ruling Ba'ath party was deeply secular.

There was deep scepticism in the run-up to the war when the administration of President George Bush alleged that there were links between Saddam and Bin Laden, who directed the September 11 terror attacks.

But a different kind of co-operation is emerging in Iraq, driven by a mutual hatred of the West, particularly the Americans and British.

For the Arab foreigners in Jaish Mohammed, the alliance is a jihad, similar to that forged by Bin Laden and his allies to expel Soviet forces from Afghanistan. According to those who know them, the Iraqis have joined for a combination of religious and nationalist reasons.

The Saudi Al-Qaeda officer, who moves across the border but was believed to be in Iraq last week, is supported by wealthy Saudis rather than the Riyadh government. His Iraqi partners recruit from the pool of security and intelligence officers who are unemployed and embittered by their loss of status.

Recruits are selected for their religious tendencies and weapons skills. After vetting, they begin Al-Qaeda-style training, such as how to make remote-controlled bombs. They then stay in safe houses. "They are spread out so it's difficult to arrest them," said an Iraqi source. "When there is an operation they are brought to collection areas — either mosques or a training camp." Messages are passed by word of mouth.

Jaish Mohammed is the most dangerous of Iraq's diverse elements of resistance and its presence is increasingly potent.

On Thursday in the Karadeh area of Baghdad an American Humvee pulled up as it did daily on the main street, where the soldiers bought cold drinks. At 2.15pm, a remote-controlled bomb buried in a dirt square exploded, seriously injuring two soldiers and killing two Iraqis.

Foreign fighters were also suspected of organising Thursday's truck bomb attack on the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad, which killed 19 people.

Yesterday America's top military officer said the continued incursion of foreign fighters into Iraq could lead to a diplomatic showdown between America and Iraq's neighbours.

"It's a serious issue," said General Richard Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff. "We have to convince these countries surrounding Iraq that it is not a good idea to allow foreign fighters in."

The Americans confirm they believe Al-Qaeda is operating in Iraq. Paul Bremer, the civilian administrator, said the military had found strong links between Al-Qaeda, other Iraqi groups and guerrilla attacks that have killed 55 US soldiers since Bush declared major combat operations over on May 1.

As the disturbances spread in Basra, British troops in riot gear struggled to control mobs burning tyres and attacking cars.

Honorable Kofi Annan, General Secretary of the United Nations:

The Cuban authorities started a "deliberate and malicious" effort to block Iranian audiences from getting access to truthful news and information. This is an illegal interference with the free and open flow of international communications. The Broadcasting Board of Governors(BBG), an independent federal agency which oversees all U.S. non-military international broadcasting, has already condemned Cuban government. This interference constitutes a direct and effective violation of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19 that guarantees individuals the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. Also, this interference constitutes a deliberate effort to block the public’s access to satellite telecommunications, and as such represents a major threat to international satellite communications.

According to reliable sources, the Iranian government also has been emitting harmful signals in an effort to block the satellite broadcasting from abroad; an act that causes many health problems, such as miscarriages and birth defects. All this is taking place where the Iranian students and pro-democracy advocates have staged repeated demonstrations against the ruling Islamic government. This is a last ditch desperate attempt of the Iranian regime to block Iranian audiences from getting access to truthful news and information and deny the Iranian peace-loving people their God-giving right for democracy and freedom.

We respectfully urge the UN to strongly condemn the deliberate and malicious interference with the legitimate efforts to impart truthful, objective, and balanced news to the Iranian audience and to lodge an appropriate formal protest against the Governments of Cuba and Iran for this unwarranted and wrongful interference.

We strongly urge the United Nations to support the following items regarding the jamming of Satellite Broadcasts to Iran:

1. The UN vigorously affirm the human rights of the Iranian people to seek and receive information and ideas;
2. to strongly condemn the deliberate and malicious interference with the legitimate effort to impart truthful, objective, and balanced news to its Iranian audience;
3. to call upon the international community to censure the states that have caused this interference;
4. to urge such service providers as Intelsat and Eutelsat to cease providing services to those states that have deliberately restricted the Iranian people’s access to international broadcasting until and unless this illegal interference with the free and open flow of international communications ends; and
5. To lodge an appropriate formal protest against the Governments of Cuba, Iran and any other involved countries for this unwarranted and wrongful interference.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the United Nation to investigate the jamming satellite signals to Iran by Cuban and Iranian Governments and let the gallant Iranian people to receive a balance news and information from abroad. We respectfully ask the world community to support the peace loving Iranians who are fighting the despotic regime in order to attain and achieve democracy and freedom.

What is America?

It's not a place, a country, or a continent.
America is normalcy, the irreplaceable liberty of being normal. America is everywhere.
It is our life: a job that is sometimes satisfying and sometimes frustrating; a family and a home; waking up in the morning, making breakfast and going to work.
That's America.
It's also about playing, joking, eating, arguing, having fun. Even crying.
It's not all roses in America. But it's a world with friends, the cinema, love, the game on TV. And, alas, a world with hassles, with boors. America
even has those. America was conquered a long time ago. Then the Americans exported it,
using ships, parachutes, music and movies. With brand names and slogans. With the CIA sometimes.
We've been enjoying this America for some time. I repeat: I am not talking about the stars and stripes, but of the irreplaceable liberty of being
normal. There are many people in the world who don't have America. But many of them
are in line, because sooner or later everyone arrives in America, which everyone wants to try. It's always been like that.
Still, some people don't like it, and many, even those in America up to their necks, think they can do without it. Maybe they can - it would
probably be easier, though, if they were already in America.
The terrorists didn't just knock down the twin towers and kill 6,000 people on Sept. 11.
After all, calamities can happen: From time to time buildings collapse, airplanes crash, and war, too, is not a novel atrocity.
But what the extremists' fury has wrought is the end of the idea of America, the hope for America, the idea that we all want more America. Bush can win all the wars he wants, he can capture or kill, one, a hundred, or even a thousand bin Ladens, but it won't be enough to give us America back.
America also meant the certainty of security. It's no longer the same.
It would have been better if the attacks had struck Rome or Milan.
That's not a paradox. Think about it: If they had destroyed two of our buildings, we could always have counted on the Sixth Fleet or on the
Marines, or on Bruce Willis and Robocop. Anyway, the point is that some cavalry would have ridden in to save us. We would have heard the trumpets and have our lives given back. We would be Americans again - normal.
Instead, with America itself attacked, it's a big mess. If they're in difficulty, we're in big trouble.
Those who live in remoter and more impenetrable places are even worse off.
With America shattered, the idea of liberty and security in flames, it will be even harder to become American.
Once everything was clear: There was the world, and there was the certainty of America. After Sept. 11, there is only the world.
Only in the real world could a Boeing fly into a tower. It's true that accidents can happen, even in the America of yore. Indeed, that's what we all thought when we saw the TV footage of the first crash.
Eighteen minutes later, though, there was another error, and that wasn't possible. In the world, maybe, but not in America.
But the world has changed, and a new one, without America, has been born.
What was done to New York was done to the world's collective conscience, to us, and also to those, wherever they are, who were not yet Americans but saw in the idea of America their last chance for freedom and normalcy.

The smiling bomber won't be smiling anymore.
Early this week,Ali Amrozi,the author of the Bali's tragedy ,has been sentenced to death.
After hearing the final sentence of the Bali's court against him,he thanked Allah,saying that he 'will die as a martyr for killing the corrupt western tourists' ( better known as infidels).
He added that 'there will be other Amrozi', as a sign of his indifference to the sentence against him and ,worst,to the crime he done against innocent tourists.

As another sign of his indifference to all this,he kept on smiling during all the course of the trial.
The death sentence was a great victory for the terrorists.Now,they would think,Amrozi is going to live near the vergins of the paradise of Allah.
Was not it better sentence him to life imprisonement?

It's to note that the trial was attended by the relatives of the victims of that attack on the beautiful island of Bali.

He is a great friend at President Bush and is candidate with the Republican Party.
It's to note that he is married at one member of the Kennedy dinasty.

Arnold will challenge the 'King' of the Porn magazines, Larry Flynt.

But all the polls show clearly that Shwarzenegger is going to win the Recall elections and will be the next Governor of California state.
His main task will be re-build the disastered economy of California, in financial crack under the leadership of Democrat governor Gray Davis.

If one looks at the exemples of Italy,Germany,Japan,etc..which were freed by the Americans,he can note the same situation ( maybe ).
All of them came out from a long war,destroyed by yrs of cruel dictatorships,very poor,were run for some months by an American envoy.Soon after,provisional local govts ruled those countries till that after 2 yrs were held some referendums ( in Italy , Referendum between Monarchy and Republic,where Italy chosen Republic,after yrs of monarchy)so that people freely decided their form of govt and later they were ready for the general elections.
Now we are prosperoud and democratic nations,due also to the great aid of America ( the famous Marshall Plan which made the impoverished Europe return to life ).
So,the arab leaders can freely refuse to recognize the iraqi provisional govern ( which provisional leader is,for 6 months,an islamist),but they must be aware that,even if they dont want to loose their power,democracy will reach their societes soon or later.
No one wants to impose democracy.Promotion of democracy is however a good thing.
Give a voice to the unheard arab voices is a wonderful thing.
Let them know what democracy is an excellent thing.
Then they will decide.
and there is no one which doesnt like to live in a democratic society.

Very sad day.

August 6, 2003 -- Fifty-eight years ago today, an American B-29 nicknamed the Enola Gay and commanded by Col. Paul Tibbetts left the island of Tinian and dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, a second bomb fell on Nagasaki.
The attacks persuaded the militarist-dominated Japanese regime to surrender, ending the most horrible war in history.

Despite the horrendous loss of civilian life and cataclysmic physical destruction, few at the time doubted President Harry S. Truman's wisdom in using the bomb.

Lately, though, a growing circle of revisionist and politically motivated academics - many of whom came of age during Vietnam and consider the U.S. military among the world's most evil institutions - has declared the atomic bombing of Japan to have been not only unjustified but little short of an actual war crime.

It was nothing of the sort.

True, the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, compiled after the war, concluded that Japan likely would have surrendered even without the bomb. But not all analysts agreed - and certainly, nothing known to Washington at the time justified such a view.

Indeed, intercepts of Japanese communications showed a major troop buildup precisely in the areas that would have borne the brunt of the planned allied invasion of the Japanese mainland - an invasion that might have cost the lives of half a million U.S. troops (not to mention Japanese lives) and taken until the end of 1946 to force a surrender.

Despite the heavy toll, the bomb likely saved more lives than it took.

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote yesterday that Japanese scholars increasingly believe the bombs were the only reason government pragmatists were able to overcome the warlords' demand that Japan keep fighting.

As Japan's chief Cabinet secretary later wrote: "The atomic bomb was a golden opportunity given by heaven for Japan to end the war."

That it was - and Americans need feel no guilt or shame over having used it.

In a June 25th Wallstreet Journal editorial entitled "We Must Unite to Prevent An Ayatollah Nuke", former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres wrote:

"Americans" are just now beginning to understand the dangers posed by a nuclear-armed Iran. A recent Washington Post/ABC poll found that 56% of Americans endorse the use of U.S. Military action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while just 28% oppose it. By contrast, we Israelis have always understood the dangers posed by a nuclear Iran, a state that has long backed terrorist attacks against our people."

The problems of the Islamic Mafia Regime in Iran, nuclear armed fanatics and violence in the Middle East are no doubt some of the most crucial issues the world faces and must be remedied early on in this new century. Therefore, it is because of this most pressing need that we should assume a sensitive more thoughtful approach rather than one that is merely focused on the Iranian nuclear facilities and their eradication.

Mr. Peres rightfully acknowledges the concern felt by many Israelis in regards to the Iranian regime's nuclear capabilities and ambitions, however, it is not right to suggest we unite in order to focus exclusively on the "nuclear issue", but more importantly, that we unite in order to end the factors that fuel fanaticism and most importantly the factors that strengthen the hands of the Mullahs.

For decades, violence in the Middle East, most importantly Israeli/Palestinian violence, has been a gift much appreciated by the Islamic Mafia Dictatorship. This persistent conflict has not only given them strength to remain in power but has also given them a cause to support with billions of dollars, which they have stolen from the Iranian people. What has, more often than not, appeared to be utter disregard and lack of compassion for the rights of both the Palestinian and Israeli people, has left the region in an atmosphere of violence and despair. It is this violence and despair that has made it so incredibly easy for fanatics to recruit young Muslims who are willing to die in their fictitious battle against the "infidels."

In assessing the approach that has been employed by individuals such as Mr. Peres and others over the years, we arrive at a sobering conclusion, which is that their conflict-solving methods have not worked and their continued utilization will only lead to more violence, more death, and a much more powerful and tyrannical Islamic regime in Iran. This being the case, it becomes abundantly clear that if a truly positive and sustainable solution is to be reached between nations of the region, the United States will have to maintain a leadership position, while making sure to follow an even-handed, intelligent and effective approach tailored specifically to each conflict while acknowledging the overall regional dynamic.

Developing an effective approach to this predicament will no doubt take much patience and ingenuity, and by no means would I dare suggest that its implementation and success will be as simple as my suggestions may sound. However, at a time when matters of such urgency lay before us, it is vital that we put all options on the table.

Rather than suggesting we unite in an effort to prevent the "Ayatollah Nuke" as Mr. Peres puts it, "we" should instead unite in an effort to expose and openly confront the decades worth of human rights abuses in Iran, a strategy that would place great importance on supporting the will of the Iranian people and would deal immense pressure into the hands of the Tyrannical Mullahs. We must unite in an effort to educate the American public about this regime that has killed over 120,000 Iranians over the past 20 years, continues to funnel large sums of it's wealth into the hands terrorist groups, and most recently beat and tortured a Canadian Iranian photographer to death. In addition we should continue to strive for a peaceful solution to Middle East violence while clearly differentiating between the peoples of the region and the corrupt dictators who rule over them. Such a policy that combines full support for the Iranian people while creating a more peaceful region will weaken the Iranian regime and fanatics throughout the Middle East to the point of collapse.

If we follow a policy that focuses exclusively on the nuclear issue and military strikes while failing to address the will and rights of the Iranian people, we would only strengthen the Islamic regime. Merely striking Iranian nuclear facilities would likely have the dangerous outcome of instantly re-aligning the majority of Iranians, who currently favor the United States and our democratic concepts, more to the side of the Tyrannical Mullahs.

We cannot bomb our way to democracy in Iran, but we can ally ourselves with the people of Iran and fight by their side. In the end the whole world, including Mr. Peres, will have its' wish, a nuclear-free Iran. Although, even if the new democratically-elected leadership were to have nuclear capabilities, it would pose no threat to Israel, because both nations would likely have good relations.

I am an American citizen who believes in the approach that President George W. Bush, as well as other senators and congressmen have endorsed, which is to support the will of the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom. It is an approach that seems more likely to eradicate fanaticism because it attacks, weakens and will ultimately remove the Islamic regime by defending the Iranian people, 1,000,000 of whom live in the United States. The approach outlined by Mr. Peres would likely strengthen the mullahs by continuing to fuel unrest in the region and by making the United States truly look like the "Great Satan" when in fact, in the eyes of the Iranian people, we are their "only hope!"

The coming age will be one marked by the rise of great leaders who will vow to do what is right and just. All nations of the world have made mistakes in the past, but we are entering a new age, and lessons have been learned from the mistakes of yesterday. Soon ideas from a new generation of young spirited minds will lead us through the darkness into the great future mankind will surely achieve through unity, truth and knowledge.

Cyrus, who was exceptionally tolerant of local religions and local customs and against slavery, is famous for freeing the 42,000 Jewish captives and allowing them to return to their homeland. Were it not for Cyrus, it seems at least possible that the Jewish people would have become extinct in the fifth century BC and we would have never received their great contributions to mankind. It is time for a collective and decisive action by the Canadian, G8 governments, and the international community to support the freedom-loving Iranian People, to put an end to such horrific crimes against humanity and to pave the way for freedom.

A Call for UN & World Leaders to Prosecute Organizers of Suicide/Homicide Bombings Against Civilians as War Criminals

To: UN and World Government Leaders
We, the undersigned, petition the United Nations, its Security Council and World Government Leaders to join Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to declare that homicide/suicide bombings and acts of terror against civilians are "war crimes against humanity."

Furthermore, we insist that the United Nations, its Security Council and World Government Leaders declare that raising infants and children to become suicidal/homicidal bombers is a violation of fundamental human rights, a breach of the Geneva Convention and a war crime. Italy has been listed by the US Department of State as one of the main targets of a possible terrorist attack.
This would be due to the newly pro-American stance of Italy in the international issues such as the political and indirect support of the war on Afghanistan and Iraq,plus the support to Israel and the partecipation to the global war on terror( Italy has in fact some troops in Afghanistan and Iraq who are gaining a vital role against the taliban in afghanistan and the saddam-loyalists in Iraq).

However, this is said to be a normal warning as the US prepares for the anniversary of Sept 11 attacks.
Many say also that this worldwide known warning makes the terrorist aware that the world is on alert everymoment , and they cannot do anything of what they plan..

One thing which many people in the West is worried about is the final objective of the islamic terrorists: conquer Rome,as it was in Constantinopolis,Turkey.
This is wrote in the islamic 'traditions' (hadith) but i doubt that this may be realistic.

IN THE MID-1990s, the renowned political scientist Samuel Huntington provoked a worldwide debate with his thesis that foreign affairs would no longer be defined by war between nations but by the clash of civilizations. The experience of Kuwait, our small but indispensable ally in the Persian Gulf, suggests that we must stay attuned as well to the clash of civilizations within nations.

What grabs your attention as a newcomer and nonspecialist are the cultural contradictions of Kuwait. You encounter them in the airport corridors, the luxury hotel lobbies, the rundown beachfront amusement parks, the corporate headquarters, and the truly extravagant shopping malls.

The culture of the Arabian desert and the culture of the West constantly come into contact in Kuwait, and discover ways to peacefully coexist. Sultry young women sashaying in designer jeans and high, high heels pass by, without missing a beat, while women covered from head to foot in dark robes drift along the same streets like ghostly apparitions. Men in traditional garb--flowing white gowns, white headdresses, and leather sandals--confer with male colleagues who could pass for casual-Friday corporate lawyers. And perhaps most startling, since women in Kuwait lack the right to vote, men and women mingle freely on the street, at the mall, and in the workplace.

I traveled with a small delegation of journalists, think tankers, and Senate staffers as a guest of the Kuwaiti government to learn more about democratization in Kuwait, whose 850,000 citizens and 1.25 million guest workers live in a small, sun-baked land beneath which lies 10 percent of the world's proven oil reserves. The special occasion was the July 5 parliamentary election, the 10th since the ratification of Kuwait's constitution in 1962, and the 4th since 1991, the year that Kuwaitis typically, and with emotion, refer to as their "liberation."

Kuwait is, in many ways, the most democratic of the Arab states in the region. This year's campaign season was lively, with candidates for the National Assembly frequently renting space in vacant lots, pitching tents, giving speeches every evening, and providing a late buffet supper where their constituents' conversation--that venerable and transcultural mix of politics spiced with grumbling and gossip--could continue.

Home to one of only two natural ports in the Persian Gulf, Kuwait has for hundreds of years been a commercial and cosmopolitan center. In contrast to Saudi Arabia, a large country with a closed and cleric-driven society, Kuwait is compact--from Kuwait City on the Persian Gulf it is an hour drive north to Iraq and an hour drive west or south to Saudi Arabia--and historically open to outside influences. Its constitution guarantees the equality of all citizens. Its ruling family, from whose ranks come a substantial number of the government's ministers, tends to be Western-educated, enlightened, and generally progressive. Its 50-seat parliament is the most active in the Gulf, its press the freest, and its women, who account for 34 percent of the labor force and two thirds of the bachelors degrees in the country, are the most economically active in the Arab world. Perhaps this is why the legal exclusion of women from voting and holding political office was on the mind of every politician, journalist, and activist with whom we met.

It's not that the woman question was the only issue faced by voters. From the owner and editor-in-chief of Kuwait's largest newspaper, to the chief executive officer of Kuwait Petroleum Company, to the former Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States, our interlocutors argued that the Kuwaiti economy is stagnating and that the remedy is privatization. This is a difficult proposition, however, in a country where 90 to 95 percent of the labor force is employed by the government, which generally pays more than the private sector. And designing institutions to create the right incentives will be difficult in a country whose oil wealth supports a massive welfare state with no taxes that generously funds its citizens' health, education, and housing needs.

YET IT IS SUFFRAGE that has become the focal point in the contest between Islamist and liberal forces. The law prohibiting women from voting, we were told by former Minister of Oil and ex-Kuwaiti Ambassador to the United States Sheikh Saud Nasser Al-Sabah, is "completely unconstitutional."

In 1999, the emir of Kuwait dissolved parliament and, along with a variety of other liberalizing measures, sought to grant women the right to vote by decree. But even liberals opposed his action on the grounds that such a law should arise from within the National Assembly. Shortly thereafter, when the liberals put the measure to the test, it came up two votes short. So far, court challenges to the law have been dismissed on procedural technicalities, though one of the leaders of the Women's Social and Cultural Society has a constitutional challenge pending, and expects a judgment in the fall. An activist organization as old as the Kuwaiti constitution, the Society is composed of journalists, professors, businesswomen, medical doctors, research scientists, and lawyers, and its board has expressed confidence that regardless of this court decision, women will be voting four years from now in the next National Assembly election.

ON JULY 5th Kuwaiti citizens went to the polls. Liberals had been hopeful and Islamists worried, but the liberals fell from 9 seats to 3, and Islamists gained slightly, giving them about a third of the seats in parliament. Nevertheless, this is not the debacle for democracy that the Western press has made it out to be. Because most of the rest of the seats went to candidates loyal to the government, a generally liberal force in Kuwait, informed observers believe that this National Assembly, with the support--and perhaps at the initiative--of the government, will indeed enact legislation giving women the right to vote. If that happens, the further tempering of the clash of civilizations within Kuwait may well contribute to the tempering of the clash of civilizations beyond its borders.

Almost all the EU nations never found the right word to describe the old palestinian president Yasser Arafat in the way he deserves to be called:terrorist,lier and oppressor.
It's enough to analize the issue that underlines how correct these words are.Arafat is the leader of a very famous and old terroristic organization since 30 yrs.This group organized several of the most brutal attacks such as the infamous "Black September" ( where innocent jewish athlets were killed during the Olympyc Games),
the hijacking of the famous italian cruise ship "Achille Lauro"(when the wanted terrorist Abu Abbas ordered the merciless killing of a handicapped jewish passenger by jumping him into the sea.Despite the palestinian protests,Italy and the italians want Abbas to be extradited in Italy so that he can face a severe punishment).
Arafat and his group also supported the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, by sending thousands of palestinian fighters to kill thousands of innocent iranians,guilty also for their ancient hostility to the arabs.

The iranians hostility against the arabs is historical, since the arab occupation of the Zoroastrian Persia.
This hostility,and specially the one against the palestinians can see well saw into the students-led popular protests,where the people always chanted slogans such as "Leave Palestine alone,think about us!" or "Palestine is not our cause,we must destroy the mullah's regime, not Israel !"
The simphathy of the Iranian people towards the jewish is to be dated the times of the kingdoms of Darioosh and Koroosh ( Cyrus ).
The Persians freed the jews in Babylon.
A group of mullahs from the Seyedis minority occupied the power by the force, trying to delete all the traditions and heritage of the Aryian land.

The Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has met with US President George W. Bush this morning at the White House.Among the issues who were discussed were the most effective ways for the Road Map to suceed.1st,the problem of the return of the palestinian refugees. A move that Israel cannot allow for some reasons: most of these "refugees" fled away for their will and now they are sirian,lebanese and jordanian citizens.
Israel also cannot allow something that might mean its destruction.

On this point, the European nations are divided.
The French-German-Russian-Belgian axis agree with the palestinian demand.
Spain,Portugal,Italy,Bulgaria,Poland,Romania,Hungary,etc.. disagree and stand by Israel .

2nd:the controversial issue of the liberation of the palestinian "political" prisoners. Sharon decided to free a great number of them and Bush alike.
But this move is wrong and very dangerous. First of all,how can you free the murderers of your people??

I doubt that this will bring more security.
It may also cause anger at the Sharon's administration.

3rd,the controversy about the building of the Wall ( who should protect the israelis and the Israel state at whole from the islamic terrorism).

It's quite difficoult to understand if this can be helpful to the cause of peace and security for Israel or not.

I swear that i got shocked by the images of the Hussein sons'bodies.i was capable only to see them on the Fox News Channel.
In fact,almost all the italian media refused to show them for some simple reasons:
those images were so hard for the kids to see them: a dead man must be respected,they say,even the worst criminal.I dont know what exactly the majority of the italians thinks on this issue.In America,there are different point of views.But the major part of the american public eventually agreed with the Pentagon's move.Some just reason may explain this sentiment.
In effect, they are loosing a lot of their soldiers and they look forward at the capture of the main character of this daily tragedy: Saddam Hussein. Wanted Alive or Dead.I also think that the Pentagon was just to realising the videos of Uday and Qusay, even though i was so shocked by seeing them..
Yet, the objectives are clear:tell the iraqis that those that for years terrorized and brutalized them are gone and won't be coming back.
The other objective was to show the american public opinion that, maybe, now the US might going towards their second victory: win the peace.

Unofficial sources say that the capture of Saddam is next.
One point is to be clarified:

It’s disgusting to see people apologize for doing nothing wrong, especially to wrongdoers.

On July 14, Miami-Dade County mayor Alex Penelas spoke at the NAACP’s national convention in Miami Beach and apologized for protests of Nelson Mandela during his June 1990 visit to Miami. Why did these protests occur?

Maybe it had something to do with the former South African president’s affection for mass murderers.

Sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1964 for armed resistance to the apartheid regime, Mandela was released in February 1990. In May he visited Libyan tyrant Muammar Qadhafi and received the “International Qadhafi Prize for Human Rights,” an award with the moral logic of an “Heinrich Himmler Prize for Religious Tolerance.” Mandela’s remarks included:

We consider ourselves to be comrades in arms to the Palestinian Arabs in their struggle for the liberation of Palestine. There is not a single citizen in South Africa who is not ready to stand by his Palestinian brothers in their legitimate fight against the Zionist racists.…

Mandela returned to Libya in 1997 and called Qadhafi “my dear brother leader,” decorating him with South Africa’s highest honor, the Order of Good Hope. He called Yasser Arafat his “comrade in arms” in 1990 and in 1999 laid a wreath at the Ayatollah Khomeini’s tomb, saying, “[W]e are indebted to the Islamic Revolution.” When Iran’s theocrats charged 13 Iranian Jews with spying for “the Zionist regime” in 2000, Mandela called the sham proceedings “fair and just.”

More painfully in the context of Miami, Mandela is an ardent admirer of Fidel Castro. In October 1995, Mandela held a “solidarity conference” between Cuba and South Africa in Durban where he said:

I went to Cuba in July 1991, and I drove through the streets with Fidel Castro. There were a great deal of cheers. And I also waved back believing that these cheers were for me. Fidel was very humble; he smiled but he never said a word. But when I reached the square where I had to make some remarks to the crowd, then I realized that these cheers were not meant for me, they were meant for Fidel Castro. Because everybody forgot about me, and was really aroused by Fidel Castro. Then I realized that here was a man of the masses.

Indeed, so much a man of the masses that Castro has denied Cubans elections and freedom of thought for 44 years. “Long live Comrade Fidel Castro,” Mandela said during that 1991 visit, claiming that Communist Cuba had achieved the “systematic eradication of racism.”

I’d like to hear him say that to Eusebio Peñalver, a black Cuban who opposed Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship and then suffered 28 years of imprisonment for his opposition to Castro’s totalitarianism. Peñalver has recalled how his jailors told him, “Nigger, we brought you down from the trees and cut your tail!” (Former political prisoner Jorge Valls notes in his memoir Twenty Years and Forty Days how black peers “always got more than their share of the beatings and bayonets.”)

I’d like to hear him say that to black Cuban human rights activists in exile like Marcos Lázaro Torres, Vicky Ruiz Labrit, and Ramón Colás.

I’d like to hear him say that to black Cuban prisoners of conscience like Dr. Oscar Biscet and Jorge Olivera, sentenced to 25 years and 18 years in April.

I’d like to hear him say that to the families of Lorenzo Enrique Copello, Bárbaro Leodán Sevilla, and Jorge Luis Martínez. On April 11, the Castro regime executed these three young black Cubans after summary proceedings for hijacking a ferry to flee Cuba.

Writing of Mandela’s tyrannical sympathies and claim in January that President Bush seeks “to plunge the world into a holocaust,” Christopher Hitchens observes: “this latest garbage is a very timely caution against our common tendency to make supermen and stars and heroes out of fellow humans…being on the right side of history once is no guarantee that the subsequent fall will not be from a very great height.” (Cuban American National Foundation executive director Joe Garcia recently said, “I think history will judge Nelson Mandela as a great man.” Maybe in South Africa, but what will the suffering blacks of Cuba or murdered Israeli civilians say?)

Cuban Miami owes no apology to Mandela, but Mandela owes an apology to them and to the Cuban people. And not just Mandela but also the NAACP, which has yet to issue a single press release calling for the liberation of heroes like Dr. Biscet.

Reforming the U.N. for the benefit of the world's people.

Italy has proposed a serious reform of the U.N. and the Security Council.
The reform proposed consists in this:

Reforming all the system, by granting a seat in the Security Council only to the Democratic countries and all the countries who respect the human rights and the individual liberty.

Unfortunately, today we see that Libya is the chairman of the UN commission for the Human Rights.
Well, every one knows what is the record of the human rights violations of the Qadhafi's regime.

Other dictatorial regimes have a great voice in the UN.
Let's think of Cuba, Sudan,Pakistan,China, etc..

The UN have "approved" a very soft resolution against the Cuban regime after its recent wave of Repression.

The UN has put many ifs and buts to this resolution.

Still, the UN Security Council is formed by many anti-democratic regimes.

Well, can the free world allow this?

The UN was born as a pro-human rights organization aiming to the defense of the oppressed people of the world and defense of the human rights in the world.

Now the UN is completely corrupted by these nations.
It openly contradicts its goal for which it was created.

The oppressed citizens of the not-free world look at UN with anger.

We cannot but agree with Bush when he says that the UN is becoming a useless organization.

No one says that UN must be abolished.
But it must be completely reformed by granting seats only to the democratic nations ( who are not only in the West )..
while isolating the anti-democratic regimes.

Reforming the UN is very important if we want it to survive, otherwise it will end like the Society of the Nations.

This proposed was advanced by the Italian Trasnational Radical Party and accepted by the italian govt.

This would be the best way to help the oppressed people to freeing themselves of their oppressive regimes.

Actually, the UN is legitimizating the dictatorial states.

I'd be ready to organize a sit-in in solidarity of the Iranian freedom fighters , here in my city and i have some people already told they will attend.

I believe that the slogan is "We are all Iranian Students".

July 9th is passed,but the Iranian people is still being massacred.

Solidarity must be expressed always.

The Reuters News Agency's local office in Iran has issued another MIS-report on the actions which rocked, yesterday evening, the Iranian Capital. A news issued by this news agency of British origin was titled as "Iranian political protests continue, but smaller".

This is not the first time that for an "unknown" specific reason the British news agency tries to undermine the amplor and extent of news which are able to show the extent of the popular rejection of the Islamic regime including its so-called "reformist" faction that European countries are continuing to support and promote.

It is to note that the yesterday evening's unrest was much bigger than the precedented 2 nights and the extent of the brutality used by the regime shows the degree of its panic.

Some believe that the Reuters reporter who has written the article might have, or follow his agency's interests linked to the British Industrial lobbies; Or that have been present, only, at the beginning of the yesterday evening's unrest and at a time that many Iranians were still ho,e watching the exceptional broadcast of Reza Pahlavi's interview by most of the abroad based oppostion TV networks.

I was shocked by the yesterday's terror attacks against innocent jewish.It clearly shows that peace is not possible till the terror network is broken. Another day of popular protests yesterday in Iran..
Today also is expected one,despite of the threats by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
The religious police forces is getting very nervous and losing every hope for the success of their repression.

The students are responding to the calls for uprisings by the US-based satellite or radio broadcasts. They often sit and hear to the messages from Reza Pahlavi .
Reza Pahlavi fascinated a lot of Iranian youth, both male and female, with his pro-democracy and pro-secularism speeches and his non-violent beliefs.
Civil Disobedience is the solution.
The girls are waiting for the day when they will be able to walk withouth the veil and listening pop music, kissing thei boyfriends, wearing western clothes..

The dying regime, both hard-liners and "reformists", is unable to find people who can defend it and is forced to call the foreign mercenaries ( Palestinians ,Syrians,Iraqis,Pakistanis,radical Afghans) to be helped to repressing the revolts..

Several injured demonstrators are reported to be in critical conditions including 2 of them in deep coma following the brutal attack of the Islamic regime's special forces earlier morning.

Most of the injured were beaten on their heads and foreheads with heavy clubs and several of them are carrying knif wounds.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Thousands of Iranians took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday chanting anti-government slogans after police surrounded a student dormitory at Tehran University in the capital, witnesses said.

"Political prisoners must be freed," some 3,000 people shouted in a square near the university, the scene almost four years ago of the biggest unrest since the 1979 revolution. Other chants were directed against Iran's clerical rulers.

Many people said they had gathered after hearing calls by U.S.-based Iranian exile satellite television channels to go to the campus after student protests there earlier on Tuesday.

Some people lit fires in the streets, but police had so far not intervened in the peaceful protests.

I wanted to give one my opinion on the movement of the civil rights of the womena and the blacks-
I am for the equality of every people in front of the law .
I am for equal opportunity for both men and women and black and white.
However, i think that the civil rights movement in America and Europe was wrong on some issues..
It fought for the supremacy of the black on whites and the women on the men.
What is the result ? Still many women are oppressed in the world.
And even here in the West , the women have no 100% of equal opportunities..
Even if they gained much results.
What a true pro-women movement must ask for , is the equal opportunities with the men.
Abraham Lincoln said "The human beings are created equal ". So no one must claim "supremacy" rather they must claim "equal opportunity".
I think it's time for a new pro-women movement.

Finally i bought the new CD of Ricky Martin.
Just now, while writing this, i am escuchando ( listening to ) his music.
His music is wonderful .. it's a mix of pop and salsa.
I must say that i can understand what he sings about, as i can speak spanish very well.
Ricky Martin is from San Juan, Puerto Rico, but he lives in New York and Miami.
In one of his songs , he says : "Tiengo tambien una foto con Bush " ( "I also have a photo of myself with Bush " ).
However, i always liked him since the beginning.

Oriana Fallaci is one of my favourite writers. I respect and sometimes i agree with her opinions, even if i think she is too hard with every muslim .
She is neither right-wing nor left-wing.
He often critizes Berlusconi, as well as she often critizes the hipocryt leftists.
She got very angry with the muslims and Islam since the sept. 11 attacks.ù
I agree with some of her opinions, but i think she should make difference between the many radical muslims from those who are moderate.
However,she is respectable, because she has been since long time a war correspondent from various countries of the world and interviewed so many important world's leaders.
Because of her controversial book ,"The rage and the pride" , written soon after sept. 11th, she got death threats by the radical muslims living in France..
A suisse tribunal wants to condemn her for "racism".
It can be that we cannot agree with all of her opinions, they can sound exaggerate and too hard, but no country can condemn a person for her opinions, unless they incite to violence ( and this book doesnt do at all ). Worst of all, no foreign country can be allowed to condemn another country's person.
I don't like Islam and i have some diffidence with some muslims. But i am enough intelligent to understand that there are ( thanks God ) many muslims who are moderate and pro-democracy.
As Italian Minister of Interior said, "we must support and dialogue with the moderate muslims and promote their ideas. " he also added that "It's time that the radical imams ( those who preach hatred and violence in the mosques ) are kicked out.
Italy will do this while talking to the moderate muslims. It's up now to the islamic countries who claim to be moderate, to show us they are really moderate. They must kick out all the violent imams. So did Saudi Arabia.
I support all the moderate muslims and i know they are many.They must start talking to their followers. We need them..

I have just finished reading Oriana Fallaci's passionately written book, "The Rage and the Pride," in which she warns us, loudly and clearly, of the Islamic Reverse Crusade which has as its goal the conquest of the West. The attack on 9-11 was the Pearl Harbor of the Crusade.

"It is a war of religion," she writes. "A war they call Jihad. If we do not defend ourselves, if we do not fight, the Jihad will win. … It will cancel our culture, our art, our science, our identity, our morals, our values, our pleasures. … Europe is no longer Europe. It is a province of Islam. … It hosts almost 16 million Muslim immigrants and teems with mullahs, imams, mosques, burqas, chadors. It lodges thousands of Islamic terrorists whom governments don't know how to identify and control."

Oriana Fallaci, the dauntless, uncompromising Italian journalist, made her mark as an international writer by her incisive interviews with such world leaders and politicians as the Dalai Lama, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Kissinger, Arafat, Golda Meir, Ariel Sharon, Indira Gandhi, Ali Bhutto, Willy Brandt and many others. She lives in Manhattan where for the last ten years she has been working in seclusion on a historical novel.

She was at home on Sept. 10, 2001, when she had a premonition of something terrible happening. On the next day, hearing the sirens of police cars and fire trucks, she turned on the TV and, she writes, "Don't ask me what I felt at that moment or soon after. … I was ice-frozen. Even my brain was ice-frozen. I don't even remember if I saw certain things on the first tower or on the second. She didn't know what to do until six days later, when the editor of a major Italian newspaper came to New York and asked her to write about what had happened in the form of a letter to him. She wrote the article, and the paper sold a million copies. She decided to expand the article into a small book.

"It was born all of a sudden. It burst like a bomb. Unexpectedly like the catastrophe that on September 11 disintegrated thousands of creatures and destroyed two of the most beautiful buildings of our time: the Towers of the World Trade Center." Writing nonstop, "The Rage and the Pride" was completed in two weeks.

It caused a sensation in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. In France, a Muslim group tried to get the French edition banned because they considered it racist. But the judge saw no point in banning a book that had already sold 45,000 copies in France and about a million in Italy. Besides, the book has nothing to do with racism. It has everything to do with the war between religions. Fallaci writes:

All the so-called Revolutions of Islam began in the mosques. Not in the universities, as the [liberals] want us to believe. Behind every Islamic terrorist there is an imam, and Khomeini was an imam. … And I declare that many imams (too many) are spiritual guides of terrorism. … [The Saudi Ministry of Religion] is the mighty organism that divulges fundamentalist theories throughout the world. That throughout the world builds mosques and schools where the unlucky Muslim students learn nothing but the 6,236 Koran's verses by heart. … And where they are recruited to fight the Holy War.
The Islamists have threatened to kill Fallaci because of her courage in speaking out against the Islamization of Europe. But now she is not alone. Brigitte Bardot, the famous French film star, writes in her new book, "A Scream in the Silence," "I am against the Islamization of France. … For centuries our forefathers, the ancients, our grandfathers, our fathers gave their lives to chase all successive invaders from France."

There are now 5 million Muslims living in France. But the situation in Italy is worse, since it is like a land bridge from Africa to the European Union. Fallaci writes:

Because our cultural identity has been well defined for thousands of years, we cannot bear a migratory wave of people who have nothing to do with us … who are not ready to become like us, to be absorbed by us … who, on the contrary, aim to absorb us. To change our principles, our values, our identity, our way of life. And who in the meantime molest us with their retrograde ignorance, their retrograde bigotry, their retrograde religion. I am saying that in our culture there is no room for the muezzins, for the minarets, for the phony abstemious, for the humiliating chador, for the degrading burkah.
Fallaci, a passionate defender of Western Civilization, vows to fight to the death. She tells the Islamic enemy, "War you wanted, war you want? Good. As far as I am concerned, war is and war will be. Until the last breath."

This is the biography of top cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya Sardinia

Oswaldo was born on February 29, 1952. He is the fifth of seven brothers. His first studies were in the primary public school in the Havana Section of
El Cerro. Later he enrolled in the Catholic school of the Maristas Brothers
until the new regime intervened and closed the institution.
Oswaldo's family is harassed by the Castro Regime from the first moment they
took power for not sympathizing with the communist ideologies and their
involvement with the Catholic Church. During the Bay of Pig's (Girón Beach)
invasion in 1961, he suffers, with his family, the first of many "progróns"
or acts of repudiation. A mob of organized people with loudspeakers,
composed by agents and militiamen situated themselves in front of their home
and for a long time threatened, offended and shouted "Paredón" which means
"Execute them!" They also terrorized the women and children.

During his early school years Oswaldo refuses to join the Pioneer Movement,
which is the preamble to the Communist Youth Union in Cuba. His openly
critical behavior against the regime costs him his liberty and is sent to
"Isla de Pinos" in May of 1969 sentenced to forced labor. Later, he is sent
to the Camagüey Province to work for 18 hours a day during the sugar
harvest. Finally he is sent back to "Isla de Pinos" where he stays until
1972. During this stay Monsignor Francisco Oves, Bishop of Havana, provides
him with the keys to the church where he organizes mass and services to the
young prisoners and old people.

In 1972 he enrolls in the University of Havana. He is soon classified as a
worm ("gusano") and is forced out of the University. He continues to study
with the help of few friends in a center that provided night classes. Work
is also hard to come by due to his denial to become part of the Cuban
Communist Party (PCC). He has to abandon his job as a professor in the
Pre-University studies for not following the instructions of the PCC.

In 1980, during the Mariel boat lift, his relatives from Miami came to pick
him up but he refuses to leave. The PCC organizes new acts of repudiation
and his house is under siege. During this decade he begins to work for the
Public Health Department as a Specialist in Electronic Medical Equipment in
hospitals. A job he currently keeps. Since then he is constantly under
surveillance from the State Security forces.

In 1986 he participates as a delegate of the Havana diocese in the Catholic
Church National Meeting, he presented a document titled "Faith and Justice"
where he defended the absolute liberty for Catholics to practice their
religion. His words were not well taken at that moment. This same year he
marries Ofelia Acevedo Maura. The union has produced three kids 14, 13 and
10 years old.

In 1987 with a group of laymen he creates "La Peña del Pensamiento Cubano"
in the Cerro Parrish church. He publishes his first declaration titled God'
s Nation ("Pueblo de Dios") where he defends the rights of not only
Catholics but of all the Cubans. In 1988, under strong pressure from the
PCC, Havana's Bishop Jaime Ortega, prohibits the publication of "Peña
Cristiana". That same year Oswaldo founds the Christian Liberation Movement
("Movimiento Cristiano Liberación", "MCL"). In 1990 he is detained and sent
to a safe house of the State Security where he is interrogated and threaten
with prison if he continued his civic and pacific fight. That same year he
calls for a national dialogue and starts collecting signatures with the
intention of making this calling for national dialogue a bill of law under
article 86 of the Constitution.

On June 11th, of 1991 a mob, organized by the government, assaulted his home
and ended his signature gathering process. The assailants sprayed paint the
front of the house with messages like "Payá, CIA Agent", "worm", "long live
Fidel", "down with Payá", etc. He had to move his family to his in-laws
home.

For the first time, in 1992, Oswaldo makes pubic his intention of running
for Representative (Delegado) of the National Assembly of the Popular Power.
Two days before the postulation process the police detained him and placed
him under custody in front of all his neighbors, to intimidate them. He was
then taken to the Revolutionary Defense Committee where he was threatened
with physical harm if he shows up in the Assembly.

In 1992, he drafts the Transitory Program that proposes a peaceful way to
transform the Cuban society. In 1993 he commences to collect signatures
once again for a referendum regarding the Transitory Program. This effort
culminated with the exodus of Cubans in the summer of 1994.

During 1995, Oswaldo participates as one of five organizers of the Cuban
Council. The State Security detains him and orders him to discourage the
meetings, which ends up breaking this organization due to the constant
repressions and the international incident of two airplanes from the
Brothers to the Rescue Organization being shot down. In 1997, along with 10
other members from the MCL, he collects hundreds of signatures to support
his candidature as a Representative in the National Assembly. The electoral
commission did not accept it. That same year he presents a formal protest
to the Assembly, claiming that the electoral law is unconstitutional and
claiming its elimination.

Between 1996 and 1997 he drafts the Varela Project. In 1998, during the
Pope's visit to Cuba, he is constantly under surveillance by the Sate
Security forces. That same year the MCL publicly promotes the Varela
Project and begin collecting signatures for a Referendum.

In 1999, along with other opposition leaders, Oswaldo drafts the manifest
titled All Together ("Todos Unidos"). For the first time the opposition
comes together to support a common goal. In March of 2001, "Todos Unidos"
summons all the opposition to collect 10,000 signatures necessary to make
the Varela Project a Bill of Law. In May of 2002 representatives of the
"Todos Unidos" group, headed by Oswaldo Payá, delivered in the office of the
National Assembly of the Popular Power 11,020 signatures of voters making
the Varela Project a bill of law under the Cuban Constitution. In July 5th
2002, the National Assembly's ordinary session suspended "until further
notice" by Fidel Castro.

I'm still concerned about the destiny of the Cuban prisoners of coscience arrested two months ago by the politic police of dictator Fidel Castro.
Actually, i know that one of them,Eduardo Chepe,is seriously ill and is difficoult to access to his prison to bring some medicines.
I'm trying to get informed about the activity of the top human rights activist Oswaldo Paya Sardinas. He is still safe and is continuing to promote the cause of liberty and democracy among his fellow countrymen in Cuba.
He has been awarded with the "SaKarov Prize " ,named after a former russian dissident. He received this prize at the European Union, althought it was opposed by the socialists and communists at the European Parliament.Prodi has shown that he was not interested to give a prize to this dissident,while European People's Party ( the the european coalition party made up of the main european center-right parties ) was the one that contributed for Payà to go to get the Prize.
In fact, Castro did everything to forbid this humble catholic man to go there .
Now he is disappointed by this .
Paya' and his movement are getting more support from an increasing number of people in Cuba and now we can say that the cuban regime is almost on to be over.
Another top dissident is Oscar Elias Biscet, a black man condenmed for calling for a public protest against the regime.
He has been arrested 3 years ago.
The police tortures him every day,including burning cigarettes on his skin.
He is a non-violent who loves Ghandi .
Before his arrest in December, Biscet said "I'm strengthened by my time in prison and I'm going to keep fighting."

Let's support the freedom and democracy-fighters in Cuba.
People in Cuba is tired of the regime and wants the change.

She already said that she and her opposition movement will continue to fight for the freedom and democracy in all the non-violent means.
She announced that she is ready to do the hunger strike..
Today,some hundreds of students clashed with the police.
But we are sure that, if the world community does something,she will be soon free and can continue to battle for liberty..

Last day, there has been the usual show "Pavarotti & Friends", with Luciano Pavarotti and some italian and international singers together for a noble cause, promoted by the Unicef. This year , the show was for the Iraqi children and the refugees who are trying to return home.
Some iraqi children, along with italian and foreign , singed with Pavarotti.
As usual, Bono Vox of the U2 singed with Pavarotti , his dear friend.
For the first time,Bono recognized that Bush is helping Africa . He thanked him and also thanked our prime minister Berlusconi for his policy of compassion towards the poor countries. Italy announced the lifting of the foreing debt on some african countries..
This is a right step towards concrete action to alleviate the suffering of the poors.
One thing Bono forgot to tell : in Africa there are so many dictators who spend the money got from the Western countries to declare stupid civil wars against other countries.
So, debt forgiveness should be accompained by a request of democratization and liberalization of those societies.. No one can pretend that without the burden of the foreign debt, these countries can solve their problems. No at all. Till there will be corrupt and despotic leaders cannot exist development.
After the indipendence from the foreign colonizers, African nations should had to changed their condition, but nothing happened and they are maybe poorer than under colonizers. I don't mean that colonialism is right, not at all ! But the african leaders have shown their peoples that there has been change and they kep their corrupt and despotic regimes.. I am sure that if they had democratized and liberalized their societies soon after the indipendence, maybe African would be a better place.. This is my opinion, but i think it's the everyone's opinion..
Also,no one should forget the rude role that the Soviet Union had in the exportation of the Soviet model in Africa. It financed and helped to arm the local guerrillas and established puppet dictators , contributing to impoverish the countries..
The West,Europe and France in particular, had its guilts. But most of these guilts belong to the Soviets and their followers.
However, France is continuing to colonize Africa,sending its troops to finance rebels.. The war that France did not fight in Iraq, it is fighting it in Africa.
So why does Belgium want to try Tommy Franks ( who freed a people ) and not Chiraq for what he is doing in Africa?????
Nothing to suprise of . Begium is a puppet of the French-German axis who wants to dominate the EU.. However, Italy , during its upcoming 6-month-long EU presidency, wants to break this hegemony and try to unite Europe to the United States..
The New Europe, specially the former communist countries,needs to count more ..

After the usual strikes by the conservative labor unions in Europe, against any form of reform and modernization,even in France there has been a strong mobilitation .
Finally, the French govt approved today the reform of the welfare, including the pension reform. This is a big step towards a more modern europe.
Within this year , Italy will propose a "Maastrich of the Welfare " and is ready to do the above reform. Surely we will have so many demonstrations here against this reform , by the usual conservative labor unions... They will try every thing to block the process of reform and modernization by Berlusconi's govt.. But they will be sucessful because they are defending their priviledges ..
It's time for our country to become modern and competitive. We need huge reforms to our economy to grow, as the leader of the Italian Industrialists said.

Pope said that the abortion is a crime against the humanity and peace cannot be there if one woman does the abortion.
This is the last hypocrisy of the Catholic Church.
Denying a woman to take a free choice is a violation of the individual liberty.
Of course, it's necessary to campaign against this bad pratice and its risks , but no one can deny a woman of its sacred right to her free choice.
Individual liberty must be respected unless it violates the rights of another person.
And i don't think that abortion at the first 2 months of pregnancy is a crime, as no baby is there yet.

May 22, 2003 -- SOME have claimed that the recent terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia and Morocco are fruit of the recent liberation of Iraq. Not at all. The attacks have their roots in the two monarchies' domestic problems in dealing with terrorism and the continued repression of religious and ethnic minorities in both kingdoms. One example of discrimination against minorities is related to Saudi Arabia's Shi'ite community.
Officially, they do not exist. In reality, however, Shi'ites account for 15 percent of the kingdom's population of 20 million.

Last month, their existence was tacitly acknowledged when the state media briefly reported a meeting between a delegation of Shi'ites and the kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah.

Those who took part in the meeting say they are bound by a vow of secrecy. But they also say that the talks, which lasted for almost four hours, were held in "a positive atmosphere."

In any case, the Shi'ites appear determined to come out of the closet as it were, and to claim equal citizenship rights. The latest sign of their determination came last Saturday, when they published a petition signed by almost 500 business, cultural and social leaders of the community.

Addressed to the crown prince, the petition calls on the government to set a national committee to propose "urgent measures" to remove all discrimination against Shi'ites and other religious minorities. The petition refers to the "historic changes in the region," presumably meaning the war to liberate Iraq, and urges the authorities to "adapt to new circumstances."

Concentrated in the oil-rich province of Al-Sharqiyah, Saudi Shi'ites form a good part of the kingdom's urban middle class. They are also strongly present in the liberal professions and the private business sector.

Yet of the top 400 government positions, only one is held by a Shi'ite undersecretary of state. Of the 120 members of the all-appointed Saudi Parliament, only two are Shi'ites.

Worse still, the official theological organs of the state, exclusively held by clerics from the Hanbali Sunni school of Islam, publicly castigate Shi'ites as non-Muslims. Courts, controlled by the Hanbali clerics, do not admit testimony by Shi'ites. The same clerics have banned marriages between Hanbali Sunnis and Shi'ites and declared all Shi'ite marriages as "illegal."

The Shi'ites insist that the Hanbalis (often wrongly known as Wahhabis) do not represent the overwhelming majority that they claim. "Saudi Arabia is a far richer mosaic of religious beliefs than many people imagine," says a Jeddah scholar.

But even the Sunni majority, some 70 percent of the population, is not monolithic. Hanafi and Shafei Sunnis are probably the majority in the Red Sea provinces of the kingdom. (The situation is complex because many heterodox individuals, and at times whole villages and towns, practice taqiyah, dissimulation, to escape persecution and discrimination by the majority.)

Saudi state policy towards the Shi'ites has varied between benevolent neglect and active repression.

The late King Faisal removed many restrictions against the Shi'ites in the 1960s. But in the 1980s agitators from Iran tried to mobilize Saudi Shi'ites in support of a Khoeminist version of their faith. They failed, but their presence gave the hard-line Hanbali clerics a pretext for seeking new restrictions on Shi'ites. Some Saudi Shi'ites fled into exile, mostly to Iran and Britain. In 1987, however, King Fahd Ibn Abdel-Aziz persuaded most of the exiles to return home in exchange for reforms.

With the rise of militant Hanbalism, one version of which is represented by Osama bin Laden, Shi'ites have emerged as the royal family's strongest supporters - for if the Al Saudi dynasty is toppled, its place would be taken by fanatics like bin Laden, who publicly state that Shi'ites must convert to Hanbalism, leave the country or face death.

Some radical bin Ladenists have used the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as a pretext for fomenting violence against the Shi'ites. They claim that the Taliban and Saddam Hussein both fell because Shi'ites cooperated with the United States. Some hard-line preachers told mosque congregations that the ultimate aim of the Shi'ites is to "destroy Muslim Arab states in the interest of the United States, Israel and Iran."

Such is the hatred of the Hanbali clerics for Shi'ites that they have issued an edict that humanitarian aid collected for Iraq should not be distributed among Iraqi Shi'ites.

Conspiracy theorists have been spreading anti-Shi'ite rumours for months. One such rumour is based on a partial reading of a report presented by the French-born scholar Laurent Murawiec to the National Defense Board in Washington last year. In the report, which was rejected by the board, Murawiec urged the United States to use military force to occupy the Saudi oil provinces where Shi'ites form a majority of the population.

What is the main reason for the radical Sunnis' dislike of Shi'ites?

This writer put the question to Sheikh Abdel-Aziz Bin Baz, then Saudi Arabia's highest-ranking Sunni theologian, during a four-hour, often stormy, interview. Bin Baz was especially shocked by the Shi'ite claim that even the basic rules of Islam could be open to interpretation and re-interpretation. "When the Shi'ites say that Reason (Aql) must be favored over Tradition (Naql), what they mean is putting man in place of God," the blind sheikh asserted. "For us Islam is a truth from the beginning (Azal) to the eternity (Abad). It cannot be something today and some thing else tomorrow."

Such issues, of course, cannot be debated in any useful context as long as radical Sunni theologians believe that they become "unclean" even by shaking the hand of a Shi'ite.

Right now, Saudi Shi'ite demands are modest:

* They want their faith to be officially acknowledged as a legitimate version of Islam.

* They want the kingdom to purge its educational textbooks of "vicious lies and slanderous claims" against Shi'ites. (Some books, often government-financed, claim that Shi'ism was "invented by a Jew as a means of splitting Islam" and accuse Shi'ites of practicing incest and cannibalism in secret.)

* They want legal equality, including recognition of their marriages and admission of their testimonies at all state courts.

* They want the state to allow Shi'ites to own and manage their own mosques, to perform their religious rites, to open schools to train their own theologians and to go on pilgrimage to Shi'ite sites in Iraq and Iran.

* They want the government to open the civil service and the armed forces to Shi'ite candidates.

"It is not normal that there are no Shi'ite army offices, ministers, governors, mayors and ambassadors in this kingdom," says a Shi'ite businessman from Dhahran. "This form of religious apartheid is as intolerable as was apartheid based on race."

It is not at all clear whether the Al Saud family is prepared to risk a direct clash with the Hanbali sheikhs to please the Shi'ites. But some Shi'ite leaders claim to have "strong allies and sympathizers within the royal family."

There is one other factor: Iraq may soon emerge as a democracy in which the Shi'ite majority has the leading role. That prospect, plus the presence of a large U.S. army just next door, has changed the political landscape of the region.

All of them are supporting the Iranian regime and hold a huge respect for the image of late Khomeini.

I think that Al Jazeera should stop to send such a messages to the arab public opinion, knowing what is their opinion.
Despite of that, Qatar,its leaders and people are very moderate and secular and pro-americans. They also have ties with Israel. They allow free speech . This is why Al Jazeera is established in a pro-US and pro-Israel arab country.

After the terrible wave of terror attacks,i ask myself where the world will go?
How many years it will take to deafeat this evil?
The answer seems difficoult . In my opinion, terrorism may be defeated if the rogue states ( Iran,Syria,Lybia,North Korea,Sudan, Cuba ) are defeated. These states are the supporters of the international terrorism. Without their regimes, terrorism would get no support and for this Al Qaeda might be defeated.
Italy is a great partner of America and Israel in the fight against terror. Despite this , Italian Minister of Interior said that " We must promote the dialogue with the moderate Islamic states." During the six-month long Italy's EU presidency, he said that the govt will promote an international conference for the dialogue between the three monotheist religions. Pisanu outlined that the dialogue will be with the "moderate" islamic states. This means that there will no be space for extremist countries,such as Sirya , Sudan and Iran.
Also, Italy hopes to invite Sharon and Abu Mazen for a peace dialogue. Next 9th June our Prime MInister Silvio Berlusconi will be in Israel to meet with Sharon. He is a great promoter of the peace process and proposed a Marshall Plan for Palestine. He also proposes Israel to enter the EU , since "it is the only democracy, along with Turkey, in a region full of despotic regimes". For this he is very friend with Sharon and Turkey's Erdogan.
The attacks on Israel of these days show how Palestinians refuse the peace and Abu Mazen is unable to handle the situation. Howver, he is a credible leader and must be heard, being very different from terrorist Arafat.
But what will happens if Abu Mazen tries to dialogue seriously with Israel?? Surely he would not find an easy situation.
Sometimes i am very very pessimistic and i think that until the terrorism will not be defeated , peace in the Middle East would not be possible.
Now, where are the so-called "peacenicks"??? They did a great chaos during the war on Iraq , but where are they now that many innocents are dying because of those that hate the peace??
Maybe they don't protest as Americans are not involved in these crimes?? And maybe because the victims are Americans and Jews??

A good leader is the Emir of Qatar. He is not only a pro-American and pro-Israeli ( he has ties with Israel ), he is ready to put the country in the road towards democracy. The recent elections have confirmed that Qatar wants to become a more democratic system. That election will give birth to the first elected Parliament and, of course, a multy-party system.
It seems that people of Qatar is very West-loving and moderate. No voices about presence of Qatari citizens in Al Qaida.
The only problem is the biased satellite tv Al Jazeera, who allows Bin Laden to speak to the Arab people.
If Al Jazeera stops to launch controversial messages to the arabs, surely arabs would be fascinated by the BinLadenism.
A key role for the formation of the arab minds is played by the Arab media. It's up to them to change their policy of doing information.
They must not give voice to the extremists and must ban every form of anti-zionism, anti-semitism and anti-americanism.
The very responsability for the corruption of the arab minds is with the media.
Today we have some moderate and pro-West media such as Asharq Al Awsat and Arab News.
Others like Al Quds Al Arabi, are very biased in favour of terrorists and dictators..
Other countries who are ready to change their systems are Bahrein and Kuwait ( who is going towards a multy party system ).
UAE is not a dictatorship , but it violates some human rights. But it seems who now there is more freedom of speech, press and opinion.

But Al Qaeda has lost its bases there.And lost the support of the Taliban regime. They lost another terror base in northern Iraq ( see Ansar Al Islam ) , who now is under the control of Poland,Spain and Kurds. It lost one its supporter, Saddam Hussein. Palestinians also lost a supporter, Saddam. We are not offering a project or a perfect model for a society, we are trying to present for consideration the first step to create new and better conditions to a right we all have. This way amongst all Cubans they believe and develop their own project of society according to their sovereign will, commencing with the spiritual values of our Nation and this experience in history and be able to confront the challenges raised by the arrival of the new millennium.

Signing this petition does not mean, in any way, to be in favor or to be associated with any enterprise or group and also does not determine any kind of compromise with the people who wrote it and present it for consideration. The exercise of this right within the regulations of the law to seek a common welfare will be a determinant factor in the overcoming of insecurity and instability of the economic activity of the citizens and would eliminate in great scale the illegal expropriations and wrongful possessions of properties, stealing, the corruption of employees and officers, the privileges taken through an abuse of power, the parasitism, speculation and many causes with differences, until now not able to rescue them, between the worker that tries to survive with a salary and the one that through speculations or a position with a certain way of power and authority is living a life economically superior. This opening will be the reason to leave behind improductivity, the very expensive negligence, unemployment in all its forms and the poverty in which more and more Cubans sink in when they are out of options or with a very poor salary, with no real value at all. This poverty and the lack of options is one of the main causes for the desire of many Cubans to emigrate, a phenomena that brings so many disarrangement to the Cuban family. From here on the currency, and with it the salary of workers, would begin to grab its real value.

The satisfaction from the consuming needs of a nation and the control and democratic property by the workers of a production media, does not limit itself to a state property, which is one of, and not the only one, the ways of a social property. The long waiting lines due to the scarcity of things, inefficiency and precariously manner in which we have lived shows the need for an opening of the citizen’s participation in the economic activity, in all matters and property. This opening has to guarantee the right to all Cubans to create private enterprises, either private property as well as a cooperative, as well as mixed enterprises between workers and the State. Will this be more difficult to accomplish as a right for Cubans and amongst Cubans, that what has already being given to foreign enterprises, the right, not only to participate but also to have, in some cases, the whole property of an enterprise, in the same way a law regulates the foreign investments?

To be able to understand this proposal it is necessary to pay attention to the two key elements of the electoral process:

1. The list of candidates or nomination of candidates, that is, the way it is determined who will be the citizens amongst which the voters will vote for as their representatives, either as delegates or as representatives.
2. The elections. We recommend the study of the current Electoral Law if you do not remember their layouts and analyze this proposal before making a decision.

According to the current law, the candidates for Delegates before the Municipal Assemblies of the "Poder Popular", are nominated by casting votes at public assemblies by the voters of the corresponding district. Nonetheless, the candidates for Delegates before the Provincial Assemblies and the candidates for delegates before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular by nominations given by the corresponding Municipal Candidates, Commission; who at the same time receives proposals from the National and Provincial Candidates’ Commission. The voters, according to the current law do not participate directly in the nomination of candidates to Delegates before the Provincial Assemblies, nor of the candidates for Representatives before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular and in addition, only one candidate is nominated for each position to be a Representative before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular. For example, if one municipality can have five representatives before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular in the election ballot will only appear five candidates and each voter can vote for one, for some, for none of them or for the five of them. At the same time no one can say it is actually defending the common welfare by declaring invalid the exercise of these rights, since a search for a common welfare implies working a way of life in society where people are able to completely fulfilled themselves, and this is impossible to a accomplish if the human rights are not guaranteed.

In addition of being a right, there is also the need of a society to have organizations that are independent, no matter if they are temporary or permanent, to be able to give citizens the opportunity to defend their interests, to form part of the State decisions and to contribute in every social aspect and contributing their efforts and initiatives in every field. The majority of votes is not imposed by an order or decree, but should be respected and guaranteed by law because it is a reality that not everybody thinks the same way over something in general or in particular and is a right one has, the fact of being able to interact and express your feelings, according to their ideas and interests, so no one with their own ideas or with any type of conditions can invalidate this right upon others. If law would guarantee free interaction and expression, it certainly will be closer to what the Constitution really represents, the right to express a diversity of actual opinions within the society would be acknowledged, more space for criticism will be opened, creativity would be enhanced, the dialogue, and democracy will become more interactive, the exercise of a general sovereign and therefore the foundations of a National Independence will get more powerful.

AMNESTY

The existence in our country of political prisoners is a result from actions of individuals that act in disregard of the law, like power abuse, arbitrarities and also violation of the law by the authorities. Many have been detained because they practiced he Human Rights to which the present law is not recognized. This step is not a revision, is a step toward an improvement to society that is aware of this need. Reconciliation cannot be given by a decree but if it is desired by our nation and it is clearly stated in the Referendum, granting amnesty, would open, through this act of forgiveness and justice, a new era for a community that wishes so much to overcome everything that was negative in the past and give itself the opportunity of a new beginning. If the Cubans cannot reach an agreement concerning the past, we do need to be in agreement about the future so it can be one in peace, fraternity and freedom, for the welfare of our children.

THE RIGHT OF CUBANS TO CREATE ENTERPRISES

With the approval of this petition we can reach a bigger participation of all citizens in the task of satisfying the needs for a property and service to the population, freeing the human capacity by working to upgrade the level and quality of life, the freedom of people and families and to contribute to the development of a nation.

The exercise of this right within the regulations of the law to seek a common welfare will be a determinant factor in the overcoming of insecurity and instability of the economic activity of the citizens and would eliminate in great scale the illegal expropriations and wrongful possessions of properties, stealing, the corruption of employees and officers, the privileges taken through an abuse of power, the parasitism, speculation and many causes with differences, until now not able to rescue them, between the worker that tries to survive with a salary and the one that through speculations or a position with a certain way of power and authority is living a life economically superior. This opening will be the reason to leave behind improductivity, the very expensive negligence, unemployment in all its forms and the poverty in which more and more Cubans sink in when they are out of options or with a very poor salary, with no real value at all. This poverty and the lack of options is one of the main causes for the desire of many Cubans to emigrate, a phenomena that brings so many disarrangement to the Cuban family. From here on the currency, and with it the salary of workers, would begin to grab its real value.

The satisfaction from the consuming needs of a nation and the control and democratic property by the workers of a production media, does not limit itself to a state property, which is one of, and not the only one, the ways of a social property. The long waiting lines due to the scarcity of things, inefficiency and precariously manner in which we have lived shows the need for an opening of the citizen’s participation in the economic activity, in all matters and property. This opening has to guarantee the right to all Cubans to create private enterprises, either private property as well as a cooperative, as well as mixed enterprises between workers and the State. Will this be more difficult to accomplish as a right for Cubans and amongst Cubans, that what has already being given to foreign enterprises, the right, not only to participate but also to have, in some cases, the whole property of an enterprise, in the same way a law regulates the foreign investments?

Law will be able to harmonize the participation of citizens, in a responsible and creative manner, in the economic doing with a social orientation from a private enterprise, with certain respect toward the consumer, with humanization of the work done, with the guaranties of the worker’s rights and with certain social security. This way the State could have a lot more resources to guarantee, without depending from foreign support, the free services of public health and education and any other type of social services and care and would give them, not as fatherly structure, but as the administrator of a common welfare, to which all citizens contribute, in a responsible manner, exercising their rights and practicing solidarity.

A NEW ELECTORAL LAW

To be able to understand this proposal it is necessary to pay attention to the two key elements of the electoral process:

1. The list of candidates or nomination of candidates, that is, the way it is determined who will be the citizens amongst which the voters will vote for as their representatives, either as delegates or as representatives.
2. The elections. We recommend the study of the current Electoral Law if you do not remember their layouts and analyze this proposal before making a decision.

According to the current law, the candidates for Delegates before the Municipal Assemblies of the "Poder Popular", are nominated by casting votes at public assemblies by the voters of the corresponding district. Nonetheless, the candidates for Delegates before the Provincial Assemblies and the candidates for delegates before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular by nominations given by the corresponding Municipal Candidates, Commission; who at the same time receives proposals from the National and Provincial Candidates’ Commission. The voters, according to the current law do not participate directly in the nomination of candidates to Delegates before the Provincial Assemblies, nor of the candidates for Representatives before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular and in addition, only one candidate is nominated for each position to be a Representative before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular. For example, if one municipality can have five representatives before the National Assembly of the Poder Popular in the election ballot will only appear five candidates and each voter can vote for one, for some, for none of them or for the five of them. The voters cannot elect their five representatives from a bigger number of candidates.

In the elections for Delegates before the Municipal Assembly, the voters of each district select their Delegate voting each voter for one candidate, the one who wishes to select amongst several that are candidates to represent said district.

In what consists the petition we are requesting?

Consists in that the Delegates before the Municipal Assembly, the candidates to Delegates before the Provincial and the candidates to Representatives before the National Assembly be nominated, that is be nominated and selected directly by the voters of the corresponding district through their signatures of support, without any intermediaries and solely in this manner.

That also several other candidates may exist for each of the Delegate’s positions before the Provincial Assemblies and of Representatives before the National Assembly, so this way the voters of each district can have the option to select amongst several the one of their preference, a possibility that the current law does not offer. That the voters of each selected district select only their Delegate before the Municipal Assembly, their Delegate before the Provincial Assembly and their Representative before the National Assembly of the "Poder Popular" and only one in each case, in this way each individual being elected responds only before said voters, that is, to those he represents.

Within a respect toward order and in agreement with the voters, they amongst themselves and the nominated candidates, the candidates, the Delegates, the Representatives may associate and get together with the voters freely and without any kind of intermediaries or guardians, during democratic assemblies and also be able to use all communication’s media, which is considered a state’s property and, therefore, should be at the service of all citizens practicing a freedom of speech. With the approval of this petition we move forward into a Democratic Participation in one of its basic foundations; the citizen’s participation by selecting their representatives and in the decisions of the different sections of the "Poder Popular".

WHAT IS THE CHRISTIAN LIBERATION MOVEMENT?
It was founded in 1988, by a group of secular Catholics belonging to the Parish of Cerro, in the city of Havana. It is a movement with certain Christian inspiration, a political-civil movement, not confessional, in which Cubans with different religion’s faith have become a part of it, that is, Catholics and Protestants, inclusive people that do not have any kind of religion, because this is not a religious movement, addressed only to religious people, the goal of this movement is to reunite all those citizens that are willing to help a nation by defending and promoting people’s right and working toward a reconciliation and peaceful changes in our society.

The Christian Liberation Movement brings into existence its projects and develops them inspired in the evangelic values and the ideas of social Christian. It does not only reject violence as the method to fight, on the contrary it fights against it, carried out by the power itself or between citizens. The Movement constantly evokes freedom against violence, by not using it, nor encouraging it, by not submitting yourself in any way to violence or to act drawn by fear.

What’s the purpose?

* To get a Cuban’s participation in the process of the changes needed in our society. Cubans are the doers, not only spectators of such reality. The solution to the problems of Cuba is a responsibility of all Cubans.
* To start a civic road that would lead us in the accomplishment of changes and therefore be able to demand a respect of the Civil and Human Rights.
* To promote the exercise of constitutional legal rights on behalf of citizens and a highly regard for the same on behalf of the Government and all official institutions.
* A qualitative change of law within the law, FROM THE LAW TO THE LAW. That is through the demand from all citizens, amend the law and the constitution and be able to go forward peacefully, toward a society that supports itself within the right and solidarity, social justice and economic freedom.
* The re-encounter again of our brothers from the Diaspora, an undividable part of our people.
* The Christian Liberation Movement develops a private freedom project that consists of: the practice of freedom of speech, overcome fake and a two-side morale and a recovery of self-esteem and creation of a conscience toward your own dignity and to respect that same dignity in your fellow-being.

An urge to exercise the Human and Civil Rights and Solidarity amongst all Cubans.

What are we doing about it?

* Demanding our legal rights. The Movement is not illegal, the problem is that is not recognized. It is the government who violates the law and Constitution by not recognizing our legal right to exist. We have presented to the Minister of the Department of Justice, by the laws of the Movement as well as all the pertinent documents required by the Corporate Law and we have not received a reply.
* We have filed complaints before the government and the "Poder Popular" National Assembly, with a result of harassment and intimidation from regulating associations.
* Some founders of the Movement, making use of their citizens’ rights were nominated by voters from their respective municipalities, through signed petitions, as candidates to become members of the Council during recent elections. Said petitions were rejected in some of the cases and not even replied in most of the cases, by the corresponding authorities.
* Recently, in December 1998, we brought before the offices of the "Poder Popular" National Assembly, a complaint to review and amend the Electoral Law, since the same was unconstitutional.
* We have prepared an Interim Program, that will serve as a master document for a national dialogue that will accomplish the steps needed to change our society in all respect.
* We are proposing for consideration of the society the VARELA PROJECT

The VARELA PROJECT introduces the first steps that should be given, amending the laws, to open the necessary spaces for a free and responsible participation of all citizens within a political and economic life of a society. In addition, it will guarantee freedom of speech and association, decree a political amnesty for the ones imprisoned due to political motives, amends the Electoral Law and determines the different period of times to hold new general elections.

The VARELA PROJECT clearly defines the amendments proposed to change the laws to guarantee the fundamental rights and be able to commence an economic opening for all Cubans.

This project deals with the intention of opening spaces for a free and responsible participation of all citizens during a political and economic life in our society.

We recommend all citizens to support the petition for a Referendum so they, as a nation will decide about this first step of setting an opening. The Constitution of the Republic in article 88g gives the citizens the right to carry out this petition. We hope that the government will respect such right.

The VARELA PROJECT would convert into law, the right to freedom of speech, the freedom of communication media and the freedom of enterprise. Also a citizen’s right to own enterprises, something that at present is a prerogative only for foreigners. It also proposes for consideration an amendment to the Electoral Law No. 72, since the same is unconstitutional. In addition there is a request of a political amnesty for political prisoners and new elections.

The VARELA PROJECT is a road for the Cuban people to walk through it with the truth and the right in solidarity and to see their hopes come true. Father Varela was the man who taught us to think as Cubans, he implanted the first seed in our minds for us to realize the right we have as people toward liberty and sovereign. That is the reason why this project bears his name.

An urgent message : some of the cuban dissidents arrested last month are dying . Some of them are badly ill. hey need medicines and food , but they don't have most of what they ask for. Above all, the need love, care and support from all the freedom-loving people in the world, regardless of their nationality.
Among the dissidents arrested are poets, journalists, writers , human rights activists and economists. They have different political opinion from each others.
Some of them are members of a movement which is promoting a popular referendum which aims to overthrow the Castro's regime and establish a democratic govt with free elections. Fortunately , the main leader of this Christian Liberation Movement ( Movimiento Cristiano de Liberacion ) , Oswaldo Paya Sardinas , is free and safe and he is living in Cuba. He collected some 15,000 signatures from cubans inside the island and many other cubans are willing to join the project. Please support the democratic dissent in Cuba and help them to gain their rights and support their fight .Many of them can have different opinion from yours. Some are social-democrats ( leftists ) , others are liberal-democrats ( rightists ) others Christian Democrats ( centrists ). This doesnt matter . You only must support them.. Cuba is now the only dictatorship in Latin America. Other south american countries turned their authoritarian regimes into a democratic ones.. Now it is time for Cuba to do so as well.

All our govt asks for is that the textbooks respect the historic truth. It asks that they can tell the studensts the whole truth about the crimes and the bloody ideologies of last century.
It's a sacred duty to teach the crimes of the Nazism. But it cannot be ignored what the communism meant for millions of people. It cannot be ignored that 100 millions of people died because of an ideology which aimed to created "the New Man" , which had to be a communist. We know very well the human cost of this experiment !!

I become a member of a non-profit and non-political italian organisation called Amici di Israele ( Friends of Israel ).. This is an organisation which aim to support the leggittime right of Israel to the exsistance threatened by the new anti-semitism coming from arabs and some europeans, from the far right wing to the far left wing.
My family always gave money to help the Church , but now we stopped to give it money , due to its hipocrysy . Now we give some of our money to the Jewish Community of Italy , a groups of Italian Jews. We remember the great suffering of the Italian Jews under fascism . Then there was a great anti-semit sentiment among the italian fascists ( and also among the communists ) . In the shops you could read "Entry not allowed to the dogs and the jews" or "Don't buy anything from the Jews". These writtens were also in the Nazi Germany. Nowadays we see the new anti-semitism not only from the arabs whom hatred for Israel is well known, but also from the fascists and communists of Europe. They are promoting a campaign of boycott of the Israeli products . They say the same things of the Nazis and Fascists in the 1940. "Don't buy products from Israel ".. This is a real shame. One can agree or disagree with the Sharon govt ( Our association can disagree with Sharon ) , but one cannot express anti-semit sentiments ! We were taught in the schools which remember the Holocaust is a moral duty in order to not repeat more what is happened in Germany and Italy. We were taught that the anti-semitism must be banned forever . But many of these students don't want hear..
We alternative youth must promote a world of peace, justice, liberty and tolerance towards everypeople of the earth , because no one must confuse a govt with a people or a culture.. Above all, we must promote the TRUTH against the lie. The TRUTH is the first enemy of the oppression. These are the values that i will teach to my children .
Many children in the world are taught to hate and kill the other different from him. They are taught to embrace an arm and fight a war. This is the case of the Palestinian children and other arab children. This is the case of the African children. These children are looted of their dignity and innocence. All of us must see the images of the African children injured or mutilated because forced to fight and kill , otherwise they are beaten by the "adults ".
Help us to stop this moral and physic violence. Let the children dream , hope and play. And above all, let the children to study for a better future.

TO THE FAMOUS QUESTION raised by Robert Conquest in his "Reflections on a Ravaged Century"--Are the crimes of the Nazis worse than the crimes of the Stalinists?--I have always been compelled, by filial emotion and family history, to answer that they were about equal. My great uncle, a Ukrainian nationalist, was shot in the head execution-style by Chekists. His wife, my great aunt, spent twelve years in Stalinist concentration camps and another decade in internal exile. My paternal grandmother was imprisoned by the Nazis and tattooed because she "looked like a Jew," and escaped a fate in concentration camps only through the bribing of local officials. My maternal grandfather was taken prisoner by the Gestapo.

Now Anne Applebaum, in the first and last chapters of her powerful "Gulag: A History," takes up the same question. My more elaborated answer, informed by her book, must be: If the Nazi record is worse because its perpetrators more deliberately and successfully murdered their targeted groups, then the Soviet record is worse because its perpetrators have managed to escape the kind of universal denunciation we level against the Nazis.

There's reason to expect they will continue to escape, according to Applebaum. She begins "Gulag" by wondering why, in the Hollywood imagination, in the writings of American scholars and journalists, and in the observations of regular travelers to the former Soviet Union, "the crimes of Stalin do not inspire the same visceral reaction as do the crimes of Hitler."

She blames the blind leftism of a majority of the intellectuals of our era, which has made them loath to condemn a system whose ideological principles they continue to hold dear.

She blames the fact that our society doesn't have a mental picture of Soviet atrocities, because "no television cameras ever filmed the Soviet camps or their victims, as they had done in Germany" at the end of World War II.

And she notes that people in the West generally hold "a firm conviction that the Second World War was a wholly just war" and that to admit "that by consigning millions of people to Soviet rule at Yalta, the Western allies might have helped others commit crimes against humanity would undermine the moral clarity of our memories of that era."

One might also add that the sheer longevity of the Soviet regime eroded outrage against it, and the implosion--as opposed to defeat--of its center of gravity meant there was never any Nuremberg-style victor's justice imposed on Moscow.

Within the former Soviet Union, there are other reasons why the seventy-two-year Communist regime remains unaccountable for its evils. First and foremost is the republic of Russia's refusal to shoulder the guilt. As Applebaum says, "Russia, the country that has inherited the Soviet Union's diplomatic and foreign policies, its embassies, its debts and its seat at the United Nations, continues to act as if it has not inherited the Soviet Union's history. Russia does not have a national museum dedicated to the history of repression. Nor does Russia have a national place of mourning, a monument which officially recognizes the suffering of victims and their families." What's more, across the former Soviet Union, those complicit in the decades of repression remain in power: Thirteen of fifteen former Soviet republics are ruled by ex-Communists. Similarly complicit lower-ranking officials permeate the corridors of political power, business, and academia. Self-protection motivates them to repress efforts to educate the citizenry, present anti-Communist dissidents as national heroes in school textbooks, bring evildoers to judgment, build museums about Soviet atrocities, etc.

The educating is left to Applebaum and the dissidents on whose discouragingly rare memoirs she draws. Her account of the concentration camps, in which eighteen million people spent some period of time between 1929 and 1953 (and millions from 1953 to the fall of Soviet Communism in 1991), is nauseatingly vivid. She recounts the political prisoners' terror and isolation, the brutality of the secret police, the rearrests following the end of a sentence, and the millions of deaths through illness, hunger, cold--or brutally quick execution. I was, as other readers will be, so sickened by the content of the book's inner chapters that I was driven to tears many times. A warning: Get "Gulag" for the first and last chapters, and read the others only when there's time to wallow in sadness for a long time after putting it down.

In a particularly disconcerting section, Applebaum explains how millions of children were either imprisoned with their mothers, or were born in the Gulag. Babies were taken from their mothers to be watched in batches of dozens by rough-mannered nurses. The nurses "took off their nightclothes and washed them in ice-cold water. The babies didn't even dare cry. They made little sniffing noises like old men and let out low hoots. This awful hooting noise would come from the cots for days at a time," wrote political dissident Hava Volovich. Of her own baby, Volovich wrote: "Little Eleanora, who was now fifteen months old, soon realized that her pleas for 'home' were in vain. She stopped reaching out for me when I visited her; she would turn away in silence. On the last day of her life, when I picked her up (they allowed me to breast-feed her) she stared wide-eyed somewhere off into the distance, then started to beat her weak little fists on my face. . . . Then she pointed down at her bed. In the evening, when I came back with my bundle of firewood, . . . I found her lying naked in the morgue among the corpses of the adult prisoners."

Applebaum doesn't chronicle just the deaths of Gulag prisoners, but also the brave and honor-filled survival of those anti-Soviet writers--Ukrainian, Baltic, and Georgian nationalists, Helsinki Watch Group members, Jews, Tatars, Christian clergy--and others who were imprisoned, in that quintessentially totalitarian way, for "who they were" rather than "what they did." She tells of their small, humane acts: their system of leaving books for subsequent populations of prisoners, their knock-based communications between cells. And she writes of their truly unbelievable political activism: their hunger strikes, campaigns of disobedience, and other methods of gaining attention from supporters in the West including, significantly, President Ronald Reagan.

Ultimately, though, Applebaum's message is that in today's climate where the sins of the Soviet Union go unaccounted for, these dissidents are disappearing into the Gulag's snowdrifts rather than rising from them. Toward the end of the book she retells Natan Sharansky's account of how, in 1982, Estonian dissident Harold Kivilio was released after twenty-five years' imprisonment into the care of his only surviving relative, his sister. She warned him not to talk politics and said her family knew nothing of his experience. Kivilio ordered her to stop the car and said, "You don't know me and I don't know you. Goodbye."

If we in America and Western Europe--particularly our educators and our media--don't help those in the former Soviet Union talk often and openly about these politics and learn about these experiences, then we've as much as pushed Kivilio out of the car ourselves.

I send my sincere condolences to the freedom-loving American people for the terrible terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia . Also 3 italians were injured. Being many americans of italian origin, we cannot but feel ourselves americans. We belong to the american family.
Again the American people is hurted in its dignity od free people and in its pride to belong to the oldest democracy in this earth.
Once again, these attacks show how Saudi Arabia is the kingdom of terror , sometimes supported by the controversial regime.. It is a regime who oppress its own people and incites him to the anti-americanism and terrorism. It's time for America to re-think its relations with this state who can well be called a "rogue state" and being included in the "Axis of Evil "..
There are other good allies in the Middle Eastern region, who are really rpo-american and are going towards the democratization of their societies.. these countries include Qatar ( who recently held free elections on a proposal draft constitution ), UAE , Kuwait ( who also is going towards a more democratic system ) and Bahrein ( the same of Kuwait, even if anti-american sentiment is growing among the islamists ). These are the countries you can count on , since they don't have any of their people members of Al Qaeda.
It's time to re-think the relations with some arab countries, except those above, till they don't democratize and stop to support ( even indirectly ) the terrorist groups in Palestine and Lebanon.

Italy needs a true Federalism. The preious center-left govt tried to do a federalist reform. It promised to do it within a few months but it never kept their promise.However, It was a false federalist reform , as it aimed to undermine the unity of our country.
The truth is that they don't either know what Federalism means.
Now the center-right govt is ready to do a true Federalist reform .Having this govt , kept many of its previous promises, we know that this time Federalism and Devolution will be a reality in Italy, a country who still suffers from statalist policies.
Our visionary leader , the only that wants to change our country turning it from a burocrathic into a modern and competitive country , has made it clear on how federalism shoulw be :
" we would like this federalism like it is in the other countries like United States, Switzerland and Scotland , where Devolution and Federalism created more competitive and prosperous societies and everything works very well. With the federalism we will get the Chamber of the Regions which will give birth to the local legislation, leaving to the Chamber of Deputies ( central govt ) the formulation of the state laws. "
despite of critics, this reform will be succesful.

The American film-maker Michael Moore don't loose his occasion to attack Bush. He exploits the occasion of the presidential campaign for the next 2004 elections to try to destroy the Bush's political image and convince the Americans to vote for the Democrats. He must be desperate from the polls showing that the 60-70% of the people would vote for Bush.. Here in Italy also we have so many "Michael Moore ". They are the so-called intellectuals, coming from the Left and known for their hatred for Berlusconi and Bush. One of them, Nanni Moretti, is a film-maker like Moore and uses all the electoral campaign to attack and insult our govt .. He did so during the 2001 election campaign when he and other leftist intellectuals have used the state-owned Tv ( paid by the italians' money ) to insult Berlusconi and say lies on him .. But people voted for him..
These people has no support from people. Now Moore wants to make a movie , produced by Disney, to attacl Bush accusing him of things he never done..
I hope that the Americans will not hear him...

The Iraqi Shiite cleric back home in Basra , welcomed by thousands of people.. He back from his long exile in Iran , where he and his group ( The Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq ) has been long supporting the Iranian regime to massacre the Iranian people.
Now he 'assures' that there will not an extreme Islam in Iraq.. This must be believed . In fact, he before, said that "The future of Iraq belongs to Islam and its desire is to get an Islamic rule in Iraq ".... I think that this news are very dangerous. I fear that the Iraqi shiites will do an Islamic revolution and will kill thousands of Americans, British, Italians, Polish and Spanish.. I want to be wrong , but i think that the Coalition forces must be very careful, coz Iraq might turn into a nightmare . I am sure that most of the Iraqis dont want an Islamic Revolution. But the minority that wants it will fight for it.. I am sure that the Islamic regime in Iran will fall soon , but i fear that once fall the Iranian regime, the Islami Revolution will born in Iraq..
It will be with the help of the Iraqi communist party, just like Iranian Mujaheddin did in 1979 . Communists and Islamists wants the same thing: killing the americans.
I think that some iraqi women are stupids if they call for an islamic state..They don't know what can expect her from a regime that hate the women..
The images of the Ayatollah Hakim remember those of Ayatollah Khomeini. He also returned from his exile and was welcomed by the people. That's why i fear the same experience in Iraq.

Key Shiite Muslim Leader Returns to Iraq

BASRA, Iraq (AP) -- Greeted by fervent flower-throwing admirers, the leader of Iraq's largest Shiite Muslim group returned triumphantly to his U.S.-occupied homeland Saturday after two decades in Iranian exile and immediately called for creating a "modern Islamic regime."

Still, Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim, likely to play a prominent role in his country's immediate future, rejected religious extremism even as he denounced the notion of any foreign-installed government to rule Iraq's fractious populace.

"I am a soldier of Islam, serving all the Iraqi people," al-Hakim, his voice forceful and resonant, told 10,000 supporters in the Basra, a southern city and stronghold of Iraq's Shiite majority.

But, he added, "We don't want extremist Islam, but an Islam of independence, justice and freedom."

The return of al-Hakim, anticipated for weeks by his followers, was expected to reinforce Shiite demands for a major role in Iraq's future government after years of repression by Saddam Hussein's minority Sunni-dominated government.

His arrival also complicates the mix of power brokers working with the United States to set up an Iraqi government. The Bush administration fears the formation of an Iran-style clerical regime, and al-Hakim's party is, of all the anti-Saddam groups, the closest to Tehran and the least amenable to long-term dealings with Washington.

In a later speech, the ayatollah emphasized his vision of an Islamic state, saying: "It will be a modern Islamic regime to go along with the modern world ... and it will also bring Iraq to its natural place in the Arab and Islamic world."

Al-Hakim, leader of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution of Iraq, rolled across the Iranian frontier at the Shalamjah border crossing, a desolate no-man's land between two countries that fought a disastrous war from 1980 to 1988 and remain uneasy neighbors.

He had been in exile in Iran since 1980, under protection of its Shiite religious leaders.

Al-Hakim's group, whose English acronym is SCIRI, has long advocated Islamic rule for Iraq. The ayatollah has said in recent days that SCIRI seeks to rebuild the country and establish good relationships with its neighbors.

But he said much work remains.

"We have some freedom, but it is not complete," al-Hakim said. "When we want to move, we find foreign troops. It limits our movement toward reaching our goals."

The religious state described in al-Hakim's speeches Saturday was not the kind that most Westerners associate with fundamentalism. He railed against those who contend that advocates of an Islamic state are people who "know nothing about this world" and are "tucked away in mosques."

"That is not true. We want to build a modern religious state ... using human and other resources, youth and women," al-Hakim said. "Some people think that women should stay at home. Now women these days are half of society ... they should be a principal part of this society."

He also lamented what he called the dictatorships of the Arab and Islamic worlds, and he denounced Saddam's fallen regime for its ethnically divisive policies and repression. Under Saddam's government, he said, "the Iraqi people became slaves."

Al-Hakim remained in Iran during the weeks after the war last month. His brother Abdel Aziz al-Hakim, who commands the group's armed wing, returned to Iraq in advance to pave the way for the ayatollah's return. The brother has been meeting with a core group of returned exiles who appear poised to become the nucleus of a new government installed by U.S. occupation forces.

Many have compared al-Hakim's return to that of Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who spent 14 years in exile in Iraq before returning to lead his country's 1979 Islamic revolution and lead its clerical regime until his death in 1989.

"He is the new Khomeini for us. A majority of Iraqi people want him as our leader," said Mohamed Abu al-Zawra, who lives in Basra and traveled to the border to welcome al-Hakim.

At the border, about 2,000 supporters gathered through the morning with the green flags of Islam awaiting his arrival. When it came, they swarmed his car and chanted, and some tossed flowers and threw themselves at his car as the 100-vehicle convoy rolled away.

In Basra, supporters slapped al-Hakim posters over tiled murals of Saddam. Some admirers wept as his convoy passed by under a giant banner of welcome. Thousands clogged the streets to catch a glimpse.

"This is the day all Iraqis have been waiting for with impatience," said Usama al-Hassan, 30, an Islamic cleric clutching a poster of al-Hakim to his chest as he condemned Saddam. "After the fall of that criminal and his gang, people can finally express their emotions and support."

The Shiite sect of Islam, a minority in the Islamic world, represents a 60 percent majority in Iraq. Iraqi Shiites are Arab, not Persian like their Iranian counterparts, and have a strong sense of Iraqi nationalism.
